PAINTING BLACK AND WHITE BIRDS
A bird might appear to be just black or just white, but is the color really that simple?
You just have to look closely to see that these birds are in reality a wonderful mix of all colors. Learn to render the subtleties of these colors, textures of feathers, color variations of bills, legs and eyes, the most engaging part of any bird. Most importantly we will study how light effects the colors of these birds.
Prerequisites: Drawing 1, 2 and watercolor or color pencil
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday February 25, 26, 28, 29 10am - 3pm

The necessary techniques are demonstrated and practiced, once these fundamental techniques have been learned the process of rendering a mammal in graphite are far less daunting.

JULY

NEW! PAINTING BIRDS - SONGBIRDS
Passerines - songbirds are the small birds such as sparrows, cardinals, and chickadees that visit our garden feeders and feed on many of the plants we paint. Posture, color, and pigment pattern accuracy may test any artist’s technical ability. Birds do not sit still posing for long periods of time, so quick sketches, collecting observational field notes, and taking good research photographs are an essential part of a good bird painting and are used as the basis for creating a rendered image.
Prerequisites: Drawing II, Bird Anatomy strongly advised.
Monday–Thursday, July 21–24, 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN, BRONX NY

AUGUST

NEW! PAINTING WILDLIFE IN ACRYLICS
Getting out from under glass! Painting on paper requires the work be framed under glass. Much of wildlife art has been traditionally worked in oils or more recently using acrylics. The advantage of working with the acrylic medium is that it dries faster, can be repeatedly layered over, mistakes sanded off - all slightly less intimidating than working on paper. Surfaces, finishes, and application of the acrylic medium its self are discussed and practiced.
Prerequisites: Drawing II, Ornithology for Illustrators and or Mammal Anatomy strongly advised.
Monday–Thursday, Aug. 11–14, 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
